About tab2json.com
Why We Built This Tool
As developers, we found ourselves repeatedly converting spreadsheet data into JSON — whether for API testing, database seeding, configuration files, or frontend mock data. Existing tools were either bloated with ads, required signups, or uploaded data to remote servers.
We wanted a tool that was fast, private, and simple. tab2json.com was born from that need: a single-purpose converter that runs entirely in your browser. No servers process your data. No accounts required. No tracking of what you convert.
How It Works
tab2json.com is a client-side web application built with React and TypeScript. When you paste table data into the input field, our parser analyzes the text to detect the delimiter (tab, comma, semicolon, pipe, or whitespace) and splits each row into columns.
The parser handles common edge cases following the CSV RFC 4180 specification:
- Quoted fields containing delimiters or newlines
- Escaped double quotes within quoted fields
- Mixed line endings (Windows CRLF and Unix LF)
- Trailing empty lines and whitespace trimming
- Inconsistent column count detection with clear error messages
When "First row is header" is enabled, column names become JSON object keys. Special characters in headers are normalized to underscores for safe use in code. The output is valid JSON that you can copy to clipboard or download as a .json file.
Privacy First
Your data never leaves your device. The entire conversion process runs in JavaScript within your browser. We have no backend servers that receive, store, or process your table data. This means:
- Sensitive data (financial records, personal information, proprietary data) stays on your machine
- There is no risk of data leaks or breaches from our side
- The tool works offline after the initial page load
- No login or account is needed — the tool is completely free
Who Uses tab2json?
Our users include software developers, data analysts, QA engineers, DevOps professionals, and students. Common workflows include:
- Backend developers converting database exports to JSON for API mock data
- Frontend developers turning spreadsheet designs into component data
- Data analysts transforming Excel reports into JSON for visualization tools
- QA engineers creating test fixtures from spreadsheet test cases
- Students learning about data formats and JSON structure
Open Source & Technology
tab2json.com is built with modern web technologies: React 18, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and Vite. The site is deployed on Cloudflare Pages for fast global delivery. We chose these technologies for their reliability, performance, and strong community support.
